With all the scary talk about the rising cost of college, the reality is, many students are paying little or zero dollars in tuition at the elite colleges regardless of their family income status. The question is why do so many families pay so much for college, while many and even the very affluent pays very little or no tuition?
It's all about preparation and planning. Many families often discourage their children from applying to certain schools because of affordability. They do not want their kids to be saddled with student loans. Indeed many students do in fact end up being saddled with student loans, particularly students that enroll in less selective colleges. With the exception of State colleges, many private colleges that are less selective or easy to get into often boost tuition rates just as high as the selective colleges. Needless to say, the rate of return of investment in the less selective colleges is very low.
